|Council Member Mary Barnes-Tilley Term Ending||February 14, 2017|
Press Release from Mary Barnes-Tilley
It has been an honor serving the citizens of our community as a member of the Brenham City Council for the past five years but I have decided not to seek re-election. I have enjoyed getting to know the citizens, hearing their concerns and giving them a voice in their local government. From a young age, I volunteered my time to serve this community and I have embraced the philosophy of servant leadership. The belief of serving others has stayed with me during my time on the Brenham City Council.
During my time on the council, I was part of the comprehensive exchange of services through the Inter local Agreement Taskforce (ILA) with the county resulting in a decrease in taxes for the citizens of Brenham. I also served on the Promotion and Tourism subcommittee to develop a long-term plan for the city as well as plans for the Historic Simon Theater. As well, I served on the Main Street Planning committee tasked with planning for our historic downtown, including implementing the Downtown Master Plan and Wayfinding program. Currently, and until the end of my term, I am working with city staff to expand recycling opportunities for Brenham, one of my goals when elected to the Council in 2012.
It has been my pleasure to work with Mayor Tate, my fellow councilmembers, City Manager Terry Roberts, as well as all the city staff, and most importantly, the citizens of this great city. While we shared differing opinions and viewpoints at times, it was always a healthy discussion and debate, and ultimately we made decisions for the good of the citizens of Brenham. It is my hope that new members of the council also embrace the servant leadership philosophy and make decisions best for Brenham.

|Washington County Has a New Non-Emergency Number||Notice: June 26, 2016|
New Non-Emergency Number for Washington County, Texas- 979-277-7373
Washington County 911 has a new non-emergency telephone number as the transition from a city department to a county one is completed. In October of 2014, the Communications Department began transitioning to a county-operated facility; during that time, the non-emergency number remained listed with the city of Brenham.
"Changing the non-emergency number is really one of the last items that needs to be completed in this transition. The current non-emergency number is 979-337-7272. We are changing that number to 979-277-7373. We do want to make sure our residents remember that if they have an emergency, they need to call 911. The non-emergency number of 979-277-7373 is just that – for non-emergencies.," said Kristy Taylor, Operations Manager of the Communications Department.
Taylor said the current non-emergency number will continue to automatically roll over to Communications for 60 days. Calls that come in during the 61-120 day period will be directed to "push 1" to be connected to Communications. Calls that come in from 121-180 days will be given the correct phone number, and then the call will disconnect, requiring callers to dial the correct number.
"We are basically giving a six-month window for our residents to become accustom to the new phone number. We’d also like to take this opportunity to ask all of our residents to register with us if they have a medical or special need. It’s important for us to have this type of information in the event of a disaster. It allows us to check on those individuals as quickly as we can to ensure they are okay," she said.
Taylor reiterated that anyone with an emergency needs to call 911.
