Update: May 25, 2012 - Master Plan Adoption - What does it mean?
In 2011, the City of Brenham and Brenham Community Development Corporation approved requests from Main Street Brenham for the funding of a Downtown Master Plan. Their approval followed a months-long pursuit of garnering support for a Plan by explaining to community leaders why a plan is important.
Supporters agreed on the following:
- Downtown drives community identity.
- Downtown is the commercial, social, economic, and logistical hub of a city.
- Downtown development practices impact property value distributions for the entire City.
- Downtown has major issues that must be addressed by the City, and they would be better addressed proactively, rather than reactively, and with community input in the process.
The Master Plan for the Downtown District is a directional plan. It is intended to provide a centralized vision for the future that provides property owners, business owners, prospective developers, and the City a point of reference when making improvements to the Downtown District. The plan also focuses on improvement efforts that have the greatest benefit, positive economic impact, and improved quality of life for the entire community.

Almost 80 people attended the first Public Workshop held Monday, January 23. Following a short presentation by Project Manager Carissa Cox, of MESA Design Associates, attendees chose one of seven opportunities to provide feedback and comments concerning specific areas of downtown. Following this session, all of the groups met together to share their thoughts with the others.
The next public meeting will be held Thursday, February 16, at 5:30 p.m. in Council Chambers at City Hall, 200 W. Vulcan. Everyone is invited to attend and hear an overview of comments and thoughts from the January Public Workshop.
